Hair Care: Paul Mitchell Awapuhi & Nexxus

awapuhinexxus

As you saw from this post, I recently cut my hair short and also brightened my locks with some color.  Maintaining highlights can be an expensive ‘hobby’ (touch-ups recommended around every 3 months), so I was on the lookout for high quality color-safe shampoos and conditioners.  My hair salon recommended Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger shampoo.  I’ve only used it once or twice now and so far, so good.  This moisturizing shampoo is great for color-treated hair (doesn’t tangle hair) and the smell is heavenly.  A little goes a long way — use a few pea-sized amounts and add water to lather into your hair.  After showering, I use a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture and my hair is good to go for a couple of days.

I like switching shampoos every few days so that my fine hair does not get used to one shampoo/conditioner.  I did some research and bought the Nexxus Color Assure set from Target.  The verdict?  Love!  Good lather and very moisturizing.  I also follow-up with the Color Assure leave-in conditioner spray.

There you have it…two hair care products currently in rotation.  Let me know in the comments below if you have any good color-safe hair products that you recommend!

Today I’m sharing some recent photos posted on Instagram (espressowithem).  Our little family hosted some out of town relatives and also took a short road trip down to Los Angeles.  With the warm (actually, quite hot) weather in SoCal and all the moving/packing of baby luggage, I chose versatile pieces to take me from day to night.  Shorts and easy breezy tops were on rotation all throughout our mini-vacation.  With the recent J. Crew sales, I picked up two amazing pairs of shorts that I literally wore all weekend.  Hope you’re having a great week thus far!

Brand New Month

FathersDay15

Happy 1st of July!  Can you believe we are starting a brand new month already?  Today also marks the first day I return to work from my maternity leave.  Four months have definitely flown by fast.  So much personal growth happened in these four months as I learn more about myself as a new mom and wife (and the emotional roller coasters that go with this!).  It’s bittersweet as I end my ‘full-time mom’ mode and ease back into work.  It’s true that becoming a mom really changes you and changes that way you think about things.

This month I’m looking forward to a (hopefully) smooth transition for baby and finding a happy medium between work and family (knowing that there’s no perfect work-life balance).  I’m also looking forward to some upcoming weekend trips with my little family.  What are you all looking forward to in July?  Hope you are enjoying your summer!

The Long Bob

From my previous posts, you’ll see I’ve had long hair for the last 6 months.  Knowing that I would be dealing with a newborn and have zero time to style my hair each day (so true), I grew my hair long so that I could easily pull it up into a ponytail.  It was a good idea for a while.  I soon discovered it took extra time to wash and dry my hair (for those days that I did wash it).  Also, once the baby became aware of his hands and fingers, he started to grab and tug at my long strands.  Since summer is upon us, I decided it was time for a hair cut and style change.

Drumroll, please…

et voila, we have the long the bob!  It’s a great length for those who want to dabble with short hair but don’t want to go all the way to a short bob.  The long bob is getting a lot of attention this season and you’ll see many celebrities going for this shorter style.

It feels refreshing to have short hair, will take me seconds to wash it, and the styling is easy.  The fun part was getting some highlights — a little bit of caramel highlights running through the top half of my hair.  My stylist also gave me a bit of ombre highlights in the back.

There you have it.  A shorter, brighter look for the new season!
